DOG BREEDS BEGINNING WITH "M"
[Manchester Terrier], [Mastiff],
[Miniature Schnauzer]
MANCHESTER TERRIER
Originating in Great Britain from around
the 16th Century, the modern day version was developed by a Manchester
breeder John Hulme. Its primary role was as a ratting dog, where it would
kill rats in a pit for the amusement of the spectators. The decline of these
activities led to a lessening of the breeds popularity and even today they
are relatively rare.
The average life expectancy for a
Manchester Terrier is 12 to 14 years, with a weight range of 13-16lbs and
standing between 10" and 12" at the shoulder. |
MASTIFF
One of the most ancient breeds of dog,
the Mastiff is known to have existed for at least two thousands years and
was in Great Britain at the time of the roman invasion led by Julius Caesar.
Used as a war-dog, a guard, a hunter and as a companion breed, the Mastiff
was known to the Babylonians some four thousand years ago. It was half of
the foundation stock for the modern day Bull-Mastiff breed
The average life expectancy for a
Mastiff is 10 to 12 years, with a weight range of 170-190lbs and standing
between 27" and 30" at the shoulder. |
MINIATURE SCHNAUZER
Originating in Germany from around the
15th Century the miniature is a mini-duplicate of the standard breed. The
reduction was thought to have been brought about by the introduction of
Affenpinscher and miniature pinscher stock. In North America the breed is
classified as a terrier breed. Their primary role was as a vermin killer and
companion breed.
The average life expectancy for a
Miniature Schnauzer is 12 to 14 years, with a weight range of 12-15lbs and
standing between 12" and 15" at the shoulder. |
