DOG BREEDS BEGINNING WITH "L"
[Lakeland Terrier], [Leonberga]
LAKELAND TERRIER
A native breed of Great Britain, the
Lakeland Terrier was developed in the north of the country around the
beginning of the 18th Century. Its primary use was to hunt and kill small
game and vermin. As with most Terriers of this construction it possibly
shares common ancestors with other distinct Terrier breeds. The Lakeland has
achieved national status by winning top dog show honours throughout the
world, but still remains relatively small in numbers.
The average life expectancy for a
Lakeland Terrier is 12 to 14 years, with a weight range of 15-20lbs and
standing between 13" and 16" at the shoulder. |
LEONBERGA
A native dog of Germany and named after
the town of Leonberg where it was first developed in the 19th Century. Its
ancestry is thought to include the Saint Bernard, Newfoundland and the
Pyrenean Mountain Dog. It primary role was as a companion dog, a role it
continues to fulfil to the present day. The breed was virtually extinct at
the end of World War II, but was rescued by enthusiasts and has continued to
increase in popularity.
The average life expectancy for a
Leonberger is 10 to 12 years, with a weight range of 80-110lbs and standing
between 27" and 32" at the shoulder. |
