DOG BREEDS BEGINNING WITH "F"
[Field Spaniel], [Finnish
Lapphund], [Finnish Spitz], [Flat Coated Retriever], [Fox Terrier-Smooth], [Fox
Terrier-Wire], [French Bulldog]
FIELD SPANIEL
Recognised as a separate show breed in
1892, prior to which it had been included as a variety of Cocker Spaniel,
the Field Spaniel was so badly served by breeders that up until the 1960's
it had little or no working dog abilities left. The breed was rescued by the
introduction of Cocker and Springer blood to rejuvenate the breed and it has
now returned to a decent level of performance. Its primary role was as a
game retriever for hunters.
The average life expectancy for a
Field Spaniel is 12 to 14 years, with a weight range of 35-50lbs and
standing between 20" and 24" at the shoulder. |
FINNISH LAPPHUND
The native herding dog of the Sami
people who inhabit the northern area of Scandinavia, the Finnish Lapphund's
primary role was to round up and protect the reindeer herds. Historically,
the origins of the breed are thought to be the merging of Spitz-like dogs
from the north and working stock from more southern areas.
The average life expectancy for a
Finnish Lapphund is 10 to 12 years, with a weight range of 40-50lbs and
standing between 18" and 22" at the shoulder. |
FINNISH SPITZ
Ancestors of this breed are thought to
have arrived with the first settlers who pre-date the modern day Finnish
population. Their primary role was as a hunting and watch dog, alerting the
hunter to the location of game and to the approach of predators or
strangers. As a working breed it thrives on exercise and activity, but
remains an ideal companion dog.
The average life expectancy for a
Finnish Spitz is 12 to 14 years, with a weight range of 30-40lbs and
standing between 15" and 20" at the shoulder. |
FLAT COATED RETRIEVER
Originating in Great Britain from the
beginning of the 19th Century, the Flat Coated Retriever is thought to be
the result of crossing the Newfoundland with other Setter breeds. Prior to
the advent of the Labrador and Golden Retriever breeds, the Flat Coated
Retriever was the foremost dog of its type, favoured by gamekeepers and
landowners throughout Britain. Its primary role was to flush and retrieve
game from land and water.
The average life expectancy for a
Flat Coated Retriever is 12 to 14 years, with a weight range of 60-80lbs
and standing between 20" and 24" at the shoulder. |
FOX TERRIER - SMOOTH
The Smooth Fox Terrier is thought to
originate from the Cheshire and Shropshire areas of northern England and is
a mix of local Terrier and Beagle bloodlines. Legend has it that the breed
was initially developed for use in horse stables to exterminate vermin. As
the name implies, they were also used to drive foxes from their lair for
hunters. Early breeders would mix and match the two breeds of Fox Terrier to
produce good working stock The Smooth Fox Terrier was officially recognised
in its own right in 1876.
The average life expectancy for a
Smooth Fox Terrier is 12 to 14 years, with a weight range of 15-20lbs and
standing between 14" and 16" at the shoulder. |
FOX TERRIER - WIRED
The Wire Haired Fox Terrier is thought
to originate from the Cheshire and Shropshire areas of northern England and
is a mix of local Terrier and Beagle bloodlines. Legend has it that the
breed was initially developed for use in horse stables to exterminate
vermin. As the name implies, they were also used to drive foxes from their
lair for hunters. Early breeders would mix and match the two breeds of Fox
Terrier to produce good working stock The Wire Fox Terrier is far more
popular than its Smooth relative, but did not become a regular show dog
until some 20 years after its cousin.
The average life expectancy for a
Wire Haired Fox Terrier is 12 to 14 years, with a weight range of 15-20lbs
and standing between 14" and 16" at the shoulder. |
FRENCH BULLDOG
Thought to have its origins with
imported English Bulldogs from the middle of the 19th Century, which were
then crossed with native French terrier breeds to produce a much smaller
hybrid. Its primary role was to exterminate vermin, but also found favour as
a companion.
The average life expectancy for a
French Bulldog is 10 to 12 years, with a weight range of 22-28lbs and
standing between 10" and 14" at the shoulder. |
