DOG BREEDS BEGINNING WITH "E"
[English Cocker Spaniel],
[English Foxhound], [English Setter], [English Springer Spaniel], [English Toy
Spaniel]
ENGLISH COCKER SPANIEL
Originating
from the beginning of the 19th Century, the English Cocker Spaniel can find
its roots in native breeds from Wales and South West England. Its primary
role was for small game and game bird retrieval, but nowadays is just as
happy in its role as a companion. As with a number of modern day breeds,
health problems can be a source of concern with the Cocker and careful
investigation of the bloodline and breed history should be undertaken.
The average life expectancy for an English
Cocker Spaniel is 12 to 14 years, with a weight range of 28-33lbs and
standing between 15" and 18" at the shoulder. |
ENGLISH FOXHOUND
Derived
from a mixture of imported and native dog breeds, the English Foxhound is a
rugged and reliable breed that is equally at home with other dogs or with
its owner. The breed is thought to have originated from around the 14th
Century
The average life expectancy for an English
Foxhound is 10 to 12 years, with a weight range of 50-70lbs and standing
between 23" and 28" at the shoulder. |
ENGLISH SETTER
The
modern-day English Setter owes much of what it is today to a single breeder
Edward Laverack who helped to develop it. Originating from the beginning of
the 19th Century, the breed derived from working Spaniel bloodlines and were
used for retrieving fowl for the hunter. Today, the English Setter is kept
as a companion dog, as well as working in the field. As with a large number
of working breeds, they require a great deal of exercise to maintain and
stimulate them.
The average life expectancy for an English
Setter is 13 to 15 years, with a weight range of 50-60lbs and standing
between 24" and 28" at the shoulder. |
ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL
Originating
in Great Britain from around the 17th Century the Springer Spaniel is the
most popular working spaniel in the country today. Their primary role was
flushing and retrieving game, which they continue to do successfully. Many
modern-day Springers are kept purely for companionship, but require
considerable physical and mental stimulation to keep them healthy and happy.
The average life expectancy for an English
Springer Spaniel is 12 to 14 years, with a weight range of 45-55lbs and
standing between 18" and 20" at the shoulder. |
ENGLISH TOY SPANIEL
Also
known as the King Charles Spaniel, this has its roots alongside the Cavalier
King Charles Spaniel and is a derivation of the original dogs so admired by
the English monarch. The earlier dogs, which the modern Cavalier resembles,
had longer muzzles and were larger in proportion. The Toy Spaniel is a
reflection of changing fashions, with a smaller muzzle and lesser
proportions than its forebears.The
average life expectancy for an English Toy Spaniel is 10 to 12 years, with a
weight range of 8-14lbs and standing between 10" and 12" at the shoulder.
