CHARACTERS FROM CHESTER - STARTING "M"

BY PHILLIP E JONES

[Margery Kendal], [Marius], [Marmaduke Langdale], [Mary Heald], [Matthew Henry], [Maxwell Ayrton], [Michael Jones], [Moses Griffiths]

Margery Kendal

Margery was said to have been the wife of a local labourer, John Kendal, who was accused of employing witchcraft against another local woman, Jean Eaton, until she was in danger of her life.

Marius

A legendary king of the Britons, who was said to have built a fortress at Chester in order to defend the region from the invading forces of Rome. The story continues that the defences were fairly rudimentary and provided little challenge to the professional legions, which easily overcame them and built their own fortress on the very same site.

Marmaduke Langdale

Langdale was the commander of the Royalist forces who was met and defeated by the Parliamentary leader General Lambert at the Battle of Rowton Moor, which ultimately decided the fate of the city of Chester. According to reports of the battle, more than 600 men on either side were killed during the encounter.

The monarch, King Charles I was thought to have watched the engagement from the Phoenix Tower at Chester and seeing his forces defeated, arranged to leave the city shortly afterwards. The destruction of his troops at Rowton also marked the final stages of the Siege of Chester, which saw the city blockaded and starved into submission.

Mary Heald

Heald was thought to be a Quaker from Knutsford in Cheshire who was accused and found guilty of murdering her husband Samuel by the use of arsenic. Sentenced to be burnt at the stake in October 1762, it has been reported that the executioner took pity on her and rather than see her suffer the agony of the flames, was said to have strangled her first.

Matthew Henry

Henry was a non-conformist religious leader and preacher in Chester, who wrote a book called “Commentary on the Holy Scriptures”, a book that he would never finish. Born at Isycoed in Flintshire in 1662, he had initially trained to become a lawyer, but later changed his mind and gave up his studies to become a dissenting minister.

By 1687 he had been appointed as a Pastor in Chester and in 1700, friends of the preacher built a chapel in Trinity Street, adjoining the modern day Guildhall, where his message could be heard. Henry was reported to have died at Nantwich in Cheshire but his body was later interred at Holy Trinity Church in the city on 22nd June 1714.

Maxwell Ayrton

Ayrton was a local architect who was responsible for the design of St Werburgh’s Row in Chester around 1935.

Michael Jones

Jones was a Colonel in the Parliamentary forces which were besieging the city during 1645 and was appointed military Governor following its surrender in 1646

Moses Griffiths

Griffiths was a local artist that painted scenes of Chester in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries.
