CHARACTERS FROM CHESTER - STARTING "D" BY PHILLIP E JONES [Daniel King], [Dafydd ap Gruffudd], [Dafydd ap Iorwerth], [Dean Swift], [Denis F Petch] Daniel King A writer and historian, King was apprenticed to the renowned Randal Holme II in Chester. He co-wrote and published “Vale Royal” a history of the city and county. The work was first published in 1656. Sadly, King was to die at the relatively young age of 31, in 1661. Dafydd ap Gruffydd He was the brother of the Welsh prince Llewellyn ap Gruffydd who was captured in 1283 by the forces of the English monarch Edward I, following the death of Llewellyn at Orewen Bridge. Dafydd ap Iorwerth He was the successor to the Welsh leader Llewellyn, but did not enjoy such a long reign as his predecessor and was generally confined to the regions of Snowdon and Anglesey by the English monarch Henry III during his time. Dean Swift Swift was the renowned author of “Gulliver’s Travels” who was a regular visitor to Chester, which marked a stopping point on his many visits to Ireland. He frequently stayed at the Yacht Inn when in the city, which was located at the junction of Watergate Street and Nicholas Street. At the time it was one of the oldest and most celebrated hostelries in the city. Denis F Petch He was a 20th Century historian, archaeologist and writer who lived and worked in Chester. He was curator of the Grosvenor Museum throughout the 1960’s and was highly critical of the local authorities approach to the modern redevelopment of Chester, seemingly at the expense of the city’s archaeological history. |
