NOTES
ON A ROMAN FORTRESSInitially
undertaken as a personal history project on my home city of Chester, the
Notes on a Roman Military Fortress has finally become a 4 booklet
history beginning with the pre-Roman settlement that overlooked the River
Dee, through to the modern city which exists today. Unlike other books on
Chester, this 110,000 word project looks at the city's development and
history in relation to wider national events.

CHARACTERS
FROM CHESTERIn common with
most ancient cities, Chester has played host to a large number of historic
figures, who have often played a pivotal role in the development of the city
as well as the English nation. From noted Roman Generals through to a
deposed English monarch and on to a king who would be executed by his
people. Famous individuals include; Henry Bolingbroke, Henry "Hotspur"
Percy, the ill-fated monarch Richard II and the highly divisive Charles I. |

THE
DRAGONS OF DEVAFollowing the
final military withdrawal of the Roman Legions in 400 AD much of Britain
fell victim to raiding pirates and barbarians. For the native people of
northwest England, their salvation was said to have come in the form of the
Votadini tribe, who were reported to have travelled from the border region
of Scotland to defend the area surrounding the former Roman fortress at
Chester. |

STRONGHOLDS
OF SUPPRESSION
Control of the local populace was successfully employed by both the Roman
and Norman conquerors of Britain through the use of military stronghold notably
military fortresses and/or castles. The county of Cheshire and the North
Wales coastline are both still littered with reminders of these dark & oppressive
buildings. This project takes a look at their history and their purpose.

STRANGERS
IN OUR LANDMaybe you
need to have been born in a particular era and be of a certain age to fully
appreciate that full extent of the changes that have occurred in Britain
over the past 50 years or so. Here's my thoughts on the subject |
UK'S
MEDIOCRE MEDIA
Are we such a lot
of unthinking automatons nowadays that we don’t warrant being challenged by OUR broadcasters and publishers? You could be forgiven for thinking so,
given the levels of utter rubbish that gushes from our
televisions and radios |

OUR
FAILING BRITAINModern
Britain is thought to be a society largely built on success and life for its
millions of native citizens has never been better. I would contend that our
modern Britain actually reflects a long term and consistent failure to
deliver a socially equitable nation |
TWO
YEARS IN MID WALES
Remembering my time as manager of B & S Motor
Spares in the Victorian Spa town of Llandrindod Wells. Although this web
page is not about the day-to-day routine of the job itself, it is really
about the handful of people that made this particular job and place so
memorable for me.... |
